We currently provide the following services at Autism Awareness Shop

Program Name: Rock Band

• Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Vocational Training Center), Tampa, FL

• Group Size: Min 4, max 6 participants

• Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities wel-come! No musical experience necessary!

• Goals: Facilitated by music therapists, our Rock Band participants will be working on cognition, socialization, and fine/gross motor abilities. Participants will learn proper usage and care of a variety of instruments, practice personal responsibility of practicing to maintain and build technique as well as learn new music and create original music.

A successful Rock Band requires peer collaboration and cooperation, self-expression, creativity and problem-solving as a group. Participants will also practice working in an organized manner with deadlines for performances, and learn to read and write some kind of musical notation to archive their creativity. A

Unique Program: Every “Rock Band” course is tailored by the music therapist to address the individual client as well as the group as a whole.

The program will evolve in order to accommodate various factors such as clients physical and cognitive strengths and areas of need. The course is administered once a week, ending with a performance to showcase all the skills acquired during the sessions (performance date and time TBD).

Instruments Provided for Class: Creative Leaps will provide the instruments (at no additional cost) that will be used during each session. Participants will not be able to take instruments home but are encouraged to practice at home in a variety of ways, listen to recordings, and if they have instruments, they are encouraged to practice them and bring them to the sessions.

Program Name: Ukulele Choir

• Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Vocational Training Center), Tampa, FL

Group Size: Min 4, max 6 participants

• Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities wel-come! No musical experience necessary!

• Goals: Facilitated by music therapists, our Ukulele Choir members will be working on cog-nition, socialization, responsibility, and cooper-ation.

A Unique Program: The Focus of “Ukulele Choir” is to learn the ukulele which is an accessible instrument that can be used in the sessions and at home to help achieve personal goals. Participants will learn proper care and usage of the ukulele while working on their fine motor control and bi-manual coordination. Participants will engage their cognitive abilities by participating in song writing and peer collaboration to create music as an ensemble. Participants will have ample opportunities to express themselves by creating original music, and exploring the different sounds that can be produced with the ukulele. Participants will learn personal responsibility by practicing on a regular basis in order to maintain and build their playing technique. Each session is tailored to accommodate the individual clients while working toward group goals.

Instruments Provided for Class: Ukuleles will be provided to clients by Creative Leaps (at no additional cost), but will not be available for clients to take home. We will provide information about where to purchase ukuleles that are reasonably price

Program Name: Voice Power

• Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Vocational Training Center), Tampa, FL

• Group Size: min 4, max 10 participants

• Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities wel-come! No musical experience necessary!

• Goals: Participants will learn how to use their voice properly, strengthen their respiratory mus-cles, and maintain their voice healthy.

A Unique Program: Participants will focus on taking a proper breath, participate in fun articulation exercises, use the correct muscles for singing (to decrease tension), strengthen their respiratory muscles, and work on slowly and gently increasing their vocal range and dynamics. Our group is a safe place for people to use their voice and not be judged. We will provide ample opportunities for musical self-expression, singing favorite songs, as well as creating new songs. Our goal is to help individuals build self-confi-dence by helping them find their unique voice and helping them learn how to be comfortable use it. Each session is tailored towards the individual needs of the participants while maintaining a focus on group goals. Instruments Provided for Class: Instruments and music will be provided (at no additional cost) during the sessions to help encourage the clients to sing and provide unique and fun styles of instrumental accompaniments. Instru-ments will not be available for participants to take home, but they are encouraged to use instruments they own when they practice at home, and may bring them to the sessions

Program Name: Musical Instruments 101

• Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Vocational Training Center), Tampa, FL

• Group Size: min 4, max 6 participants • Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities welcome! No musical experience necessary!

• Goals: Participants will learn about different types of instruments including, strings, percus-sion, woodwind and brass. during hands-on learning about different instruments, finding instruments that motivate you and bring out your musical creativity.

A Unique Program: Participants will have an opportu-nity to learn about a wide variety of instruments through hands-on learning. They will be encouraged to explore and find instruments that motivate them and bring out their musical creativity.

Instruments Provided for Class: Instruments and mu-sic will be provided (at no additional cost) during the ses-sions to help encourage the clients to sing and provide unique and fun styles of instrumental accompaniments. Instruments will not be available for participants to take home, but they are encouraged to use instruments they own when they practice at home, and may bring them to the sessions

Program Name: Intro to Songwriting and Musical Composition

• Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Voca-tional Training Center), Tampa, FL

• Group Size: min 4, max 6 participants

• Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities welcome! No musical experience necessary!

• Goals: Participants will learn about songwrit-ing and different ways of composing music.

A Unique Program: Participants will be encouraged to explore their creativity through songwriting and musical composition using a variety of tools and methods. The class will include the use of various instruments, music composition media/software, song-writing prompts with group collaboration, and many more ways of exploring musical self expression and creativity.

Instruments Provided for Class: Instruments and music will be provided (at no additional cost) during the sessions to help encourage the clients to sing and provide unique and fun styles of instrumental accom-paniments. Instruments will not be available for partici-pants to take home, but they are encouraged to use instruments they own when they practice at home, and may bring them to the sessions.

Program Name: Vocational Training – Intro-duction to Musical Instrument Repair and Maintenance

• Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Vocational Training Center), Tampa, FL• Group Size: min 4, max 6 participants

• Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities wel-come! No musical experience necessary!

• Goals: Participants will learn how to do basic repairs on a variety of musical instruments.

A Unique Program: Participants will be provided with hands-on, step-by-step directions on how to provide basic repair and maintenance to a variety of musical instruments, including, guitar, bass, drums, brass, and other instruments. Maintenance and repair will include instrument cleaning and polishing, changing parts (i.e., strings, bridges, springs, screws, etc.), applying lubrication, understanding and maintaining proper temperature and humidity, proper placement in cases and on stands, and taking apart and putting together instruments for storage/play.

Program Name: Music Therapy Group

Location: Autism Awareness Shop (Vocational Training Center), Tampa, FL

Group Size: min 4, max 6 participants

Ages: Pre teen (9 – 12) and up, all abilities wel-come! No musical experience necessary!

Goals: Participants will work on non-musical goals geared toward the group as well as the individual, facilitated by the Music Therapist and using a variety of musical instruments to employ specific Music Therapy techniques aimed at achieving non-musical goals in the areas of cog-nition, social abilities, fine and gross motor abili-ties, speech and language, respiratory function, mood and emotional regulation, self-expression, communication skills, and many more goal ar-eas as determined appropriate by the therapist.

A Unique Program: Music Therapy is the use of mu-sic as a way to facilitate non-musical goals. Our music therapy programs engage participants in being active in the music-making process that is specifically tailored to target key areas of personal and interpersonal growth. The Music Therapist guides the group and the individuals, using specific instruments, music, and exercises to provide a fun, engaging, and effective way to work on goals that will nurture the creativity in everyone and support their growth and understanding of themselves and others. Participants will learn a multitude of tools, coping strat-egies, increase their knowledge about healthy leisure activities, engage in cognitively and physically stimulating activities, and discover their creativity in music.
